Why are Young Couples More Likely to Divorce?

Despite the phrase that age is just a number, people who get married when they are young are more likely to get divorced than those who wait until they are older. One study found that people who got married when they were 20 years old were 50 percent more likely to divorce than couples who married when they were 25 years of age or older. Growing Apart

 When people are very young, they often have not fully developed into the person they are going to be. Many people will admit that the person they were in their early 20s is not the same person they were in their early 30s. As people get older, they may find new hobbies, decide that they want to continue school or go back to earn a degree, and set new goals for themselves in life. When one person in a marriage changes but the other does not, or both people change but in different ways, it can cause a couple to grow apart, which can lead to divorce.

Marrying for the Wrong Reasons 

Anyone can marry for the wrong reasons, but young people are much more likely to. It is easier for young people to idealize marriage without realizing there is a significant amount of work involved. Some young people may also only think about the actual wedding and become excited about a big party where they celebrate with all of their friends and family. When people marry for the wrong reasons, they may come to regret their decision in future years and end up getting divorced.

Money Problems 

Again, money issues are one of the most common reasons for divorce among people of all ages. This is particularly true for younger couples, though. Supporting a family, buying a home, and doing other things that married couples do are all very expensive. When a couple is in their early 20s, they often have not yet started a career that allows them to earn a living to support themselves and a household. This can result in arguments between the couple, which can lead to divorce.

Inexperience

 Couples in their early 20s have often not had much experience dating. They may not have yet realized what they are looking for in a partner, and what they do not want in a spouse. It may not be until several years after they get married that they realize they rushed into their nuptials and now have to get a divorce.
