In my Tampa, FL divorce case, what happens after the petition is filed?
After the petition is filed in your divorce or family law case, the spouse (respondent) must provide an answer to the court within 20 days of the date the respondent is served. Thereafter, the parties have to exchange what’s called mandatory disclosures which are all of your banking and financial documents and information. You’re going to give your tax return, you’re going to give your checking account statements, your credit card statements, your insurance cards and those type of things. You want to exchange that information so that both parties can determine what are all of the marital assets and debts. This the next step after you have filed the initial petition and answer.
